Brief History of the Auxiliary
The Trinity Hospital of Augusta Auxiliary was organized January 25, 1965 and since that time has grown from a group of 72 ladies to over 200 men and women.
This group is the realization of the dream of the first administrator of Trinity Hospital of Augusta , Sr. Mary Louise Herman, 1951-1972. She and Sr. Margaret Alacoque invited 125 ladies to attend an organizational meeting. The 72 who accepted were the pioneers who laid the groundwork for the organization that exists today.
Mrs. Marie Murray was Coordinator for the Auxilians for a number of years. Sr. Rose Margaret Schweers, CSJ, was active in that role until 1989 when she became Historian and Remembrance Society Chairman for the Hospital and Foundation.
Currently, volunteers staff the following services: Information Desk, Dismissal Escorts, Mail and Flower Delivery, Gift Shop, Youth Volunteer Program, Patient Transportation, Staff Support, Radiology, Central and Day Surgery reception, Family Focused Child Birth and where ever called upon. Active members give a minimum of 50 hours per year to the hospital.
Proceeds from the Gift Shop are contributed to the hospital to be used for various projects and equipment. The auxiliary also sponsors a nursing and related fields scholarship/grant program.
The first President of the Auxiliary was Mary Ward. In her honor, each year, we present to a volunteer whose dedication and service have been exemplary, the “Mary Ward Outstanding Auxilian Award”.
Throughout the hospital, volunteers maintain a splendid “esprit de corps” and close rapport with the employees, Sisters, management staff and, most importantly, the patients.
When Offering your services as a volunteer worker, it is assumed that it is your intention and wish to contribute your assistance over a prolonged period and that you will arrange your other activities in such a way that they will not conflict with your scheduled time to work at the hospital. It is important to realize that your introduction into service takes time and training before you will be in a position to contribute very much independently. It is necessary to realize the importance of your assignment and the need for your cooperation at all times, and the responsibilities you assume when you become a member of the Trinity Hospital of Augusta Auxiliary. We are delighted that you want to volunteer at Trinity Hospital of Augusta!
